There are many pilot models of effective village community forest protection and management. Community forest is an important factor in the culture and livelihood of local people, and also plays a positive role in environmental protection.
This research was carried out in the seven villages of Son Linh commune, Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province, where the Kinh (Vietnamese ethnic majority) reside and maintain community forests. 41 people were involved in in-depth interviews and provided information via semi-structured interviews. The interviews focused mainly on perceptions of the local people regarding community forest, their evaluation of the outcomes, and the effectiveness of community forest management.
On the basis of this evidence of the value of community forest, it is recommended that the on-going revision of the law on Forest Protection and Development should affirm the classification of community forest for land tenure and recognize the role of the village community in forest protection.
