Evaluation on the project managed by Van Kieu women in Khe Cat village, Truong Son commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province

  • The evaluation of the project on "Raising income and empowering Van Kieu ethnic women” was held at the Cultural House of Khe Cat village, Truong Son Commune, Quang Ninh District, Quang Binh Province on March 5, 2018. This project is funded by EU and facilitated by CIRUM. The Fund for Rural Development and Poverty Reduction in Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh Province (RDPR), Truong Son Commune officials, members of LandNet in Quang Binh province have involved in and implemented the project.

The project has been implemented since April 2017, and so far has brought wonderful results. All 10 participating households have a very good production of Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia). The participating households visited the demonstration model in Minh Hoa district, received technical training on planting, tending and harvesting the plant. Against the initial goal of planting 5 hectares of Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia), the participants have increased the planting area to 10ha. The yield of the first crop was 43 tons / 10 households. With a market price of VND 4,000 per kilogram, 10 households have collected VND 172 million. On average, each household earned VND 17.2 million. This production and income becomes a relief for the poor households of Khe Cat village, while the ability of replication is very positive.

Ms. Ho Thi Hong - Head of the project management board of Khe Cat village said: “The Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia) harvesting is prior to the food harvesting and on the occasion of the Tet Lunar New Year. In the past, my family has nothing to harvest on this occasion. From selling Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia) this year, we could buy rice, make cakes and purchase things during the Lunar New Year. At the end of Tet festival, we continue to harvest Đót to get money for our children to go to school or use for family consumption”. Today, in addition to the involved 10 households, there are 03 other households in Khe Cat village having self-managed to grow the plant on an area of 1ha per household. They were advised and supported by Ms. Hong, leader of the group.

Thus, the project is successful and very effective right in the first year of implementation. Mr. Tran Van Trung, deputy director of the Quang Ninh District Agricultural Extension Office, said: "This is the first planting model of the district with the good planning. The project brought economic and environmental benefits to the involved households. The income is very large for poor families. If it were not Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia), villagers would be difficult to have such a high and sustainable income. If planting Acacia in Khe Cat village, the good producer having products near the road would only get an income of about VND 10 million per ha, others only get VND 5 to 6 million / ha after 5 years of cultivation. Planting Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia) is meaningful because it gives high income, is familiar to local people, and helps to protect forest”.
At the closing ceremony, Ms. Ho Thi Con - Vice Chairperson of Truong Son Commune Fatherland Front, member of LandNet shared that with her responsibility, she will continue to foster the scale and increase more 5 ha of Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia). With the right selection of product, local experience and support from local authority, surely the improving livelihood for women associated with forest protection will be successful. The model of Đót (Thysanolaena latifolia) planting proves that statement in Khe Cat village, Truong Son commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province.
